Rhododendron


 

Malabar Melastone including the family Melastomataceae. 

 

The tree known also as Malabar Melastone, Indian: Rhododendron and Singapore: Rhododendron. In Malay known as: "Senduduk" ; Thai known as : "Khlong khelng khi nok". Many name in local Indonesian such: "Sikadoekdoek" (Sumatra), "Sengganen" (Java), "Harendong" (Sundanesse), and "Cengkodok". 

 


Including shrub plants, growing until height up to 6 m. position of leaves is opposite, simple, tripli-veined, tertiary venation ladder-like, densely hairy, lower surface whitish-yellow. Diameter of flowers 35 mm, with purplish. Diameter of fruits 9 mm, with yellowish-grey, fleshy capsules densely covered with hairs, opening to expose brightly red color to black seeds. Ecology of Malabar Melastone, many found in the forests up to 2700 m altitude, most common in heavily degraded forests. Often along roads and in clearings. Common in coastal, along rivers, on hill sides and on ridges.
