Canistel


Canistel including rare fruits in Indonesia, which has the Latin name is Pouteria campechiana. In local Canistel known as "Sawo mentega or alkesa". The fruit is coming from Mexico, Guatemala (Central America) and the southern part of the West Indies.

The tree have the species name, which the name refers to the city of Campeche, Mexico, where native plants. In English Canistel called as  Yellow sapote or egg fruit.

The canistel has been cultivated in many countries such as Cuba, Panama, and Nicaragua. Last time from Cuba the trees were brought to Philippines in 1915 and spread to other parts of Southeast Asia.

Canistel  also widely grown in the Seychelles. Now Alkesa or Canistel has as been on the plantation in the Philippines. In Indonesia, many people known as "alkesa, Sawo mentega, sawo ubi or kanistel Alkesa" but the people in west Java called the fruit with popular name as "Sawo Walanda" (brown dutch). Fruit when young have the green skin color and will turn yellow when the fruit is ripe, the fruit skin is very thin and easy to peel so easily to damaged.


Canistel fruits contents with a single seed like an Avocado and sweet taste like boiled sweet taste and high trunk can reach a height of nearly 10 meters.

The flavors of fruit is very a unique that is like a mix between the softness of the avocado, the sweetness of the sweet potatoes, but not fibrous and a bit rough. Canistel rich in calories, starch, vitamins, minerals and fiber, when viewed from the texture of the fruit, suitable as raw material lunkhead jam or dried into powder as a mixture of cake trays, brownies, cake or cookies.
