Kemangi is popular herb in Indonesia,  In the world known as Lemon basil, hoary basil, Thai lemon basil or Lao basil (Ocimum × africanum) is a hybrid between basil (Ocimum basilicum) and American basil (Ocimum americanum).

Kemangi leaves have a distinctive aroma, strong but soft aroma with a touch of lime. Basil is one of the ingredients for the Pepes. As fresh vegetables, basil leaves are usually eaten together leaves of cabbage, cucumber slices, and sauce to accompany chicken or fried fish.

Kemangi or Lemon basil is a popular herb in Arabic, Indonesian, Lao, Malay, Persian and Thai cuisine. In Malaysia and Indonesia lemon basil is used in rice dishes such as Nasi ulam. In Laos, lemon basil is used extensively in Lao curries, stews, and stir-fried dishes as it is the most commonly used type of basil in Laos. Many Lao stews require the use of lemon basil as no other basil varieties are acceptable as substitutes. The most popular Lao stew called or lam uses lemon basil as a key ingredient.

Basil is interspecific hybrids between two species of basil, Ocimum basilicum and O. americanum. He is also known as O. basilicum var. anisatum Benth. Aroma typically derived from the content sitral high in leaves and flowers.

Minangkabau people use this plant basil called with basil which in Thai language called bai kra pao. Basil is usually used for cooking fish curry and padeh acid (sour spicy).

The herb is grown primarily in northeastern Africa and southern Asia for its strong fragrant lemon scent, and is used in cooking. Kemangi stems can grow to 20–40 cm tall. It has white flowers in late summer to early fall. The leaves are similar to basil leaves, but tend to be narrower with slightly serrated edges. Seeds form on the plant after flowering and dry on the plant.
